Physics
The word “physics” comes from the Greek word “physis”,
which means nature. It also comes from “physikos,” meaning natural
and “physika,” meaning the study of natural things. So, physics
means the study of nature and the natural forces of the universe, such
as motion, light, energy and matter.
In Greek mythology, the forces of nature were controlled
by powerful gods. These myths helped the Greeks explain how the natural world
worked, which is the main concern of physics.
In the beginning, the universe started with Chaos and
from Chaos came the Earth goddess Gaia. She represented the physical Earth and natural
world. She gave birth to the sky, mountains and sea. This shows the origin of
the physical universe.
The sky was ruled by Zeus, the king of the gods. Zeus
controlled thunder, lightning and storms. Lightning was seen as a powerful
natural force. Today, physics studies lightning as electrical energy but in
mythology, Zeus was believed to create lightning and control its power.
The sea was ruled by Poseidon. He controlled oceans,
waves and earthquakes. When he struck the ground with his trident, earthquakes
occurred. These events showed the physical forces of nature like motion and
energy.
The sun, which gives light and heat, was associated with
Helios. He drove his chariot across the sky every day, bringing light to the
world. Light and heat are important subjects studied in physics.
The Greek word “physis” means nature, and
mythology explained natural forces through gods like Zeus (lightning), Poseidon
(earthquakes), and Helios (sunlight).
Physics today studies:
- Motion
(movement of objects)
- Energy
(like lightning and heat)
- Light
(from the sun)
- Natural
forces (gravity, electricity, etc.)
Greek mythology was an early way to explain these natural
forces.
In this way, the word
“physics” comes from the Greek word “physis,” which means nature. These myths
explain natural forces and the physical world. Therefore, physics means the study
of nature and natural forces and its origin comes from the Greek word physis,
meaning nature.
