The word chimera comes from the Greek word "Khimaira" (Χίμαιρα), which originally meant "she-goat" (female goat). In Greek mythology, however, the Chimera was not an ordinary goat. It was a monstrous creature made up of parts of different animals.
The Chimera was one of the most feared monsters in Greek mythology. According to the myth, the Chimera had:
- The head and body of a lion
- A goat's head growing from its back
- The tail of a serpent (snake)
- The ability to breathe fire
Because it combined parts of different animals, it looked frightening and unnatural. The Chimera lived in the region of Lycia in Asia Minor and caused great destruction. It attacked villages, destroyed crops and terrified people with its fiery breath.
The Hero Bellerophon
The people could not defeat the Chimera because it was so powerful. Finally, a brave hero named Bellerophon was chosen to fight the monster. Bellerophon had a special companion, the winged horse Pegasus. Riding Pegasus through the sky, Bellerophon attacked the Chimera from above. Since the monster could breathe fire, fighting it on the ground was dangerous.
According to one version of the myth, Bellerophon fixed a piece of lead to his spear and thrust it into the Chimera's mouth. The creature's fiery breath melted the lead, which flowed into its throat and destroyed it.
Thus, the terrible Chimera was finally defeated.
