Neurology

 The word “neurology” comes from two Greek words:

• “Neuron” meaning nerve
• “Logos” meaning study or knowledge

So, neurology means “the study of nerves and the nervous system.” It is the branch of science and medicine that studies the brain, nerves and how they control the body and mind.

In Greek mythology, although the brain and nerves were not scientifically understood, the Greeks believed that the mind, thoughts, intelligence and control of the body came from divine powers, especially gods connected with wisdom and mental strength.

The Story of Athena – Goddess of Wisdom and Intelligence:

Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom, intelligence and clear thinking. She was known for her sharp mind and good judgment. Her birth is very important and symbolic. She was born directly from the head of Zeus, the king of the gods.

According to the myth, Zeus had a severe headache. To relieve the pain, another god split open Zeus’s head. Suddenly, Athena came out fully grown and wearing armor.

This story symbolically connects the head (brain) with wisdom, thought and intelligence, which are controlled by the nervous system studied in neurology.

Hermes – The Messenger and Symbol of Communication:

Another important god connected to neurology is Hermes, the messenger of the gods. Hermes carried messages quickly between gods and humans. This is similar to how nerves carry messages between the brain and body. Just as Hermes transmitted messages, nerves transmit signals that control movement, sensation and thinking.
