The word “psychology” comes from two Greek words “Psyche”
(psyche) meaning soul, mind, or spirit , “Logos” (logos)
meaning study or knowledge.
So, psychology means “the study of the soul or mind.”
The origin of this word is closely connected with the famous Greek myth of
Psyche, whose story represents the human soul, emotions, and mental growth.
Psyche was a beautiful mortal princess. She was so
beautiful that people began to worship her instead of Aphrodite, the goddess of
love and beauty. Aphrodite became very jealous and decided to punish Psyche. Aphrodite
ordered her son, Eros, to make Psyche fall in love with a terrible monster. But
when Eros saw Psyche, he fell deeply in love with her instead.
Eros took Psyche to a magical palace and married her
secretly. However, he had one condition that Psyche must never try to see his
face. He visited her only at night and Psyche lived happily, though she did not
know her husband’s identity.
After some time, Psyche became curious. One night, she
lit a lamp while Eros was sleeping. She saw that he was a handsome god. But
accidentally, a drop of hot oil fell on him. Eros woke up and felt betrayed
because she had broken his trust. He left her and disappeared.
Psyche became very sad and began searching for him
everywhere. This part of the story represents emotional pain, confusion and
suffering, which are part of the human mind.
Psyche went to Aphrodite and begged for forgiveness.
Aphrodite gave her many difficult tasks, such as:
- Sorting
a huge pile of seeds
- Bringing
golden wool
- Fetching
water from a dangerous river
- Bringing
a box from the Underworld
These tasks were very difficult but Psyche completed them
with courage and patience. These struggles symbolize the challenges and growth
of the human soul and mind.
Finally, Zeus, the king of the gods, took pity on Psyche.
He made her immortal and reunited her with Eros. They lived happily forever. This
shows the soul’s journey from suffering to happiness and peace.
In Greek, “psyche” means soul or mind, and
Psyche’s story represents:
- Human
emotions (love, sadness, fear)
- Mental
struggles
- Inner
strength
- Personal
growth
Psychology studies these same things-how humans think,
feel, and behave.
The word “psychology” comes
from the Greek words “psyche,” meaning soul or mind and “logos,” meaning study.
Psyche represents the human soul and mind. Therefore, psychology means the study
of the human mind and soul and its origin comes from the Greek word “psyche.”
